Trauma/Burns division now called Acute Care Surgery

Reflecting a national trend, UAB’s Division of Trauma, Burns and Surgical Critical Care changes its name to Acute Care Surgery.

RS12076 UAB Trauma Team 11The Division of Trauma, Burns and Surgical Critical Care within the UAB Department of Surgery has changed its name to the Division of Acute Care Surgery. The name change better characterizes its current role in providing emergency surgical care and reflects a national trend.

“The field of acute care surgery includes the trauma, burn and surgical critical care services our faculty have always provided, and also represents the division’s increased role in emergency general surgery,” said Jeffrey D. Kerby, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Division of Acute Care Surgery. “In this evolving field, our division is responsible for covering all new emergency general surgery consults within UAB Hospital, and we have a surgeon on-site 24/7 to provide this service.”

UAB is the state’s only American College of Surgeons-verified Level 1 Trauma Center. The Division of Acute Care Surgery is composed of 15 faculty members committed to providing comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for trauma, burn and emergency general surgery patients across the Southeast. In addition to clinical care and education, the division is also actively involved in multiple funded studies in both basic science and clinical research aimed at improving outcomes for these patients.
