UAB welcomes renowned diabetes researchers Ananda and Rita Basu

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine and the UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center (UCDC) are pleased to welcome Ananda Basu, M.D., and Rita Basu, M.D., as full professors into the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.

Lapi appointed as first holder of the Emmet O’Neal II Endowed Professorship in the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB

The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama System recently approved the establishment of the Emmet O’Neal II Endowed Professorship in the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB. This endowed professorship, funded from the bequest of O’Neal Industries in memory of Emmet O’Neal II, will support lung cancer research. O’Neal Cancer Center Senior Scientist Suzanne Lapi, Ph.D., has been appointed as the first holder of this endowed professorship.

Kraus awarded the 2021 AOA Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship

Third-year medical student Abigail Kraus was recently awarded the 2021 AOA Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship. The award will provide her a $5,000 stipend to support her while she conducts her research project titled “Defining the role of endothelin-1 in hyperoxia-induced kidney damage.”

Chu receives $430K research award from NIH

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) of the National Institutes of Health recently awarded Daniel Chu, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, a Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award for his research project, “Enhancing Health Literacy in Surgery to Eliminate Surgical Disparities for African-Americans with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.”

The “resolution revolution” arrives with $600,000 cryo-electron microscope detector installation

Imaging of biomolecules is taking a leap forward at UAB, which installed a $600,000 direct electron detector on its cryo-electron microscope in January. This advanced, direct electron detector will yield near-atomic resolution of macromolecules and 3-D tomography of cells or tissue slices.

UAB research funding continues to increase

UAB ranked 15th nationally among public universities in research expenditures and topped $238 million in NIH funding for FY 2016. The School of Medicine received $186 million of that funding in 2016, with that number expected to top $195 million in 2017.
