Constipation which is not adequately treated may lead to more serious problems including impaction or a bowel obstruction. An impaction is treated with manual removal of all lower bowel contents followed by an aggressive bowel program. If a bowel obstruction is suspected, the patient should be referred to the Emergency Department for evaluation and treatment. Bowel perforation could occur if an obstruction is left untreated.
