Liquid stool can leak around the impacted area creating misleading symptoms, so constipation in the spinal cord injury population is often misdiagnosed as diarrhea. Therefore, anti diarrheals should be recommended only after fully evaluating the patient. This should include a thorough history as well as an abdominal x-ray to rule out constipation or obstruction, in either case encouraging oral or intravenous liquids is appropriate.
