HEADLINER AWARD

The recipient of this award is the trainee, staff, administrator, or faculty member with the most impactful media presence in the prior year. 

SinghalAparna Singhal, M.D. 

Associate Professor, Neuroradiology
Dr. Singhal and others published an editorial in Clinical Imaging entitled, “Navigating parental leave as a leader in radiology: Commentary on challenges and strategies.”  
The article was highlighted by Healthimaging.com and on the UAB website. The group was invited to both a local session hosted by the local UAB chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) and a regional session in conjunction with UAB’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion. This headliner represented herself and many other parents by leading this team in radiology.

IMAGE QUALITY AWARD

The recipient of this award is the trainee, staff, administrator, or faculty member with the most significant quality improvement project at UAB in the last year. 

ThomasAshley Thomas

Administrator
Ashley was a major organizing force behind the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement Committee. There are three subgroups, including Diagnostics, CT, and MRI. We want to recognize all of you on this committee.

CLINICAL ADVANCEMENT AWARD

The recipient of this award is the trainee, staff, administrator, or faculty member with the most significant clinical advancement at UAB in the last year. 

WilkinPeter Wilkin

CT Technology, UAB ED Radiology
Peter Wilkin and the CT Modality committee, for their handling of the iodinated contrast shortage. 
As many of you know, we had a worldwide iodinated contrast shortage that significantly challenged patient care. The CT Modality committee had to cut dosage by 80% in a very short period of time and had to find the best methods to do this across various sections and divisions. Now the team is managing the process of returning to normal with new information and new lessons learned. 

EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVE AWARD

The recipient of this award is the trainee, staff, administrator, or faculty with the most innovative educational initiative in the last year. 

GunnAndrew J. Gunn, M.D.

Associate Professor, Interventional Radiology
Dr. Gunn had multiple major accomplishments in the last few years: established the research track for radiology residents; established quality in vascular surgery, neuro-interventional, and CT procedures rotations; arranged for Independent IR residents to rotate on vascular surgery; repeat mentor to many trainees; frequent educator on social media platforms and Top Teaching Award recipient.

The recipient of this award is the trainee, staff, administrator, or faculty member with the implementation of a great idea or significant intra/entrepreneurial activity in the past year.

SortinoFrank Sortino 

Associate VP, Clinical Operations and Strategy
Senior Operational Leader for Enterprise Imaging

Frank is being recognized for his leadership in developing technologist-based focus groups to address national COVID-related shortages and retention challenges. “These groups were instrumental in allowing the techs to feel heard and also to develop a strategy for future retention/recruitment.”

PATIENT ENGAGEMENT AWARD

The recipient of this award is the trainee, staff, administrator, or faculty member with the most significant advancement in patient engagement at UAB in the last year. 

MurphyKiera Murphy, M.D.

PGY-6 Resident, Interventional Radiology
Kiera is recognized for outstanding patient engagement and commitment.
“Kiera Murphy is one of the few trainees I have encountered who is specifically requested by patients for their procedures.” 
“Kiera takes the time to recognize a patient's unique circumstances and truly individualizes their care.”  
“I saw a frequent patient on the IR board with a note that said, ‘Patient requests Dr. Kiera Murphy’. I was so proud to see this!” 
Residents and co-trainees describe Kiera as an example of excellence in patient care. “She is truly amazing!”

GalganoSam Galgano, M.D.

Assistant Professor, Abdominal Radiology
Sam, we are recognizing your excellence in intra- and inter-departmental collaboration. Examples of this are: setting up several multi-disciplinary tumor boards; supporting the Radiology Procedures Meeting; bringing together numerous faculty for the HSF GEF grant; assisting with the development of a CT procedure rotation; helping with recruitment efforts outside of his section; leading standardized reporting across different sections; and organizer of after-hour get-togethers between Abd/IR sections.

The iMRI installation was difficult for a variety of reasons, but Jeff’s colleagues recognized his efforts with the following statements: “Jeff worked collaboratively with administration, radiology, physics, neurosurgery, and preoperative services to bring the iMRI online.”
