Maryann Manning, Ed.D., distinguished professor emerita and instructor in the UAB Department of Curriculum & Instruction, has been elected vice president of the International Reading Association (IRA). IRA is a global network of more than 80,000 members who are committed to worldwide literacy. Ultimately, Manning will assume the position of president.
Manning joined the UAB faculty in 1972 and is a renowned expert in reading and writing instruction and integrated curriculum. She has written and co-authored more than 10 books and served as a columnist for “Teaching K-8” and “Childhood Education” magazines.
In 2002, Manning became the inaugural recipient of the Ellen Gregg Ingalls/UAB National Alumni Society Award for Lifetime Achievement in Teaching. She also won the Truman Pierce Award from the Alabama Association of Elementary School Administrators (AAESA) in recognition for her leadership and outstanding contributions to advance the direction of education in Alabama.
