Student Experience

The UAB Division of Student Affairs has many exceptional staff members who serve our students with professionalism, kindness and integrity. Each month, based on a pool of nominations, the Professional Development Committee announces two employees of the month, one from the professional staff and the other from the administrative staff.

The February Employees of the Month are Amanda Kuster, residence life coordinator for Housing and Residence Life, and Migdawlaw Yisrael, office administrative assistant for Student Multicultural & Diversity Programs. Their exemplary work ethic and commitment to the mission of the Division of Student Affairs makes them staffers to be revered.

“Amanda has stepped up as a leader within our division and in our state this year. As the 2017 ALLURH advisor (Alabama Residence Hall Association), she has done an excellent job with planning a statewide conference that we hosted this January at UAB. Other schools noted that we ‘rolled out the red carpet for them.’

She has also built our UAB RHA student organization from the ground up by creating a structure for the organization and advising the student leadership. Additionally, Amanda has committed to increasing our diversity education with students and partnerships with other departments across the division by leading the charge to create the ‘Tunnel of Awareness’ experience for students to engage more on difference and oppression. Amanda supervises 12 Resident Assistants. One of them recently told me that he would do anything Amanda asked because she was the hardest working person he had met. She leads by example and cares for students.”

“Ms. Mig is always working to make our office an inviting place for students. Often, people consider administrative staff as simply task masters but Ms. Mig has become an integral part of the student experience in our office. Students know that Ms. Mig will do all she can to help them and they all see her as a person they can go to for support. Additionally, she works to support SMDP's office functions including ordering supplies for events, handling payment requests, managing student assistants and serving as overall support for professional staff. We simply could not get anything done in our office if it were not for Ms. Mig. Her recognition for employee of the month is well overdue.”
