200115 TapRidegraphicUAB employees and students may now request Safety Escort and Blaze Ride service via the smartphone app, TapRide by DoubleMap.

“Technology is quickly changing how we get to, from, and around,” said André Davis, Director of UAB Transportation. “The introduction of this service is part of our comprehensive plan to move the campus towards the forefront of transportation innovation.”

Safety Escort and Blaze Ride offer on-demand van service within the UAB footprint. Safety Escort is available to all UAB employees and students from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Blaze Ride offers additional service hours – 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. – for employees or students with limited mobility. To participate in Blaze Ride, students must register with Disability Support Services by calling 205-934-4205 and employees must contact the AWARE Disability Management program by calling 205-975-9973.

In order to request a ride through TapRide, follow these steps:

  1. Download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  2. Select “University of Alabama at Birmingham” from the list of systems.
  3. When prompted, select “Rider Login” from the login system options.
  4. Input your Blazer ID and password.
  5. When prompted, select “Allow” for using location services. Please note, allowing location services is required to utilize the app.
  6. Selecting “Allow” for notifications is encouraged in order for TapRide to send updates such as the driver’s arrival time.

While UAB Transportation encourages riders to use the app, Safety Escort may still be requested by calling 205-934-8772. Eligible participants may also request Blaze Ride by calling 205-975-RIDE (7433).
