The Nuclear Medicine Technology Program at UAB is the only program of its kind in Alabama. Students in the program enjoy small class sizes, personal attention from faculty, and clinical education in many state-of-the-art facilities. Graduates boast high pass rates on national certification exams to become certified nuclear medicine technologists (NMTs).
Graduates of the program either enter the workplace with a variety of career options or continue their education through graduate study in areas such as medical or health physics. Graduates find employment as clinical NMTs, educators, research assistants, state inspectors, and sales representatives for nuclear instrumentation and radiopharmaceutical companies.
The major responsibility of an NMT is to use radioactive drugs to obtain information that will aid physicians in diagnosing disease and monitoring therapy. NMTs have direct patient contact and use a variety of radiation detection equipment and computers to acquire and process data. They also participate in quality control, preparation of radioactive drugs, and compliance with radioactive materials licensing requirements.
