ABOUT THE JOANNA B. CRANE SCHOLARSHIP
___________________________________________________
Named in honor of Joanna Breedlove Crane for her many contributions to Foreign Language education and the Foreign Language teaching profession in Alabama.
This scholarship was established and originally funded by Joanna Breedlove Crane to serve Alabama Foreign Language teachers and students.
Joanna Crane received her BA in French and Music from Huntingdon College and her MA from Southern Methodist University in French. She has served Alabama students from her early years teaching French, History and English at Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery to chairing the Foreign Language Department at Robert E. Lee High School. She has over 36 years of service in the State Department of Education, primarily as Foreign Language Specialist and Curriculum Development Specialist.
Immediately upon entering the field of Foreign Language education, Joanna became a hard-working advocate for her chosen profession. Through her effort, attendance, participation, time and generosity, organizations from the state level (Alabama Association of Foreign Language Teachers-AAFLT) to the regional level (Southern Conference on Language Teaching-SCOLT), to the national level (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages-ACTFL and the American Association of Teachers of French-AATF). These are only four of the more than 20 professional organizations that have been profoundly affected by the contributions of Joanna Crane. She has served as a founding member of some, and has helped usher all through periods of difficulty as well as times of growth.
Though retired from the State Department of Education, Joanna continues to serve her profession, first as the interim Executive Director of AAFLT as we made the momentous decision to hire an Executive Director, and now as Parliamentarian and Archivist of our organization, a role Joanna is particularly suited to fill, for she is truly our memory.
When Joanna Crane was recognized by ACTFL in 1999 with the Florence Steiner Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Education: K-12, she once again proved her dedication to and love for Foreign Language education in Alabama by contributing a portion of her award to establish the AAFLT scholarship which has now been named in her honor.
The Joanna Breedlove Crane Scholarship will take time to grow before it can fulfill its purpose. It provides a wonderful opportunity for you to demonstrate your own professional dedication through a donation to the scholarship fund.
All contributions, large or small, in memory of a loved one or in honor of a friend, will help the fund develop more quickly to begin serving Alabama teachers and students as Joanna intended. One hundred percent of all gifts go directly to the scholarship fund and will be acknowledged with a letter of acceptance.
Joanna Crane has given us a model of professional pride. Our challenge is to follow that model.
