FYI
Linda Meigs (Grissom) is challenging as many French teachers as possible at the Middle and High School levels to seek National Board Certification. If interest is insufficient, there is a danger that the French option will be discontinued.
It has been announced that the College Board will discontinue Advance Placement in French Literature after 2009 (Note that AP French Language is unaffected). AP Latin Literature and AP Italian will also be discontinued. According to the College Board, these programs are no longer cost effective because enrollments are so low. The American Association of Teachers of French is urging its members to write letters to the Board of Directors of the College Board in order to protest the discontinuation. For more information and addresses of the Board of Directors, contact Jayne Abrate, Executive Director of AATF abrate@siu.edu.
Some interesting news comes from the last two ACTFL Post-Secondary Planning Surveys. According to the spring 2007 survey, Italian topped the charts and "if given the option, more students would choose to study Italian than any other foreign language." But In fall 2007, French appears to be on the ascendancy and "[...] students chose French as the language they most wanted to study [...]," followed by Italian and then Spanish.
