Alabama A&M University
Alabama A&M University, located in Huntsville, Alabama, is a 131 year-old institution supported by the State of Alabama and federal funds. It was organized in 1875 as the result of a bill passed in the State Legislature in 1873 and through the continued efforts of its first principal and president, William Hooper Councill, an ex-slave. The school opened on May 1, 1875, as the Huntsville Normal School with an appropriation of $1,000 per year, 61 students and two teachers.
Alabama A&M University reflects the uniqueness of the traditional land-grant institution which combines professional, vocational and liberal arts pursuits. The University provides baccalaureate and graduate studies that are compatible with the times to all qualified, capable individuals who are interested in further developing their technical, professional and scholastic skills and competencies. It operates in the three-fold function of teaching, research and public service, including extension. A center of substance and excellence, Alabama A&M University provides a setting for the emergence of scholars, leaders, thinkers and other contributors to society.
The University received a “Class A” rating by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in August 1946 and became a fully accredited member of the Association in December 1963.

Alabama A&M University is a dynamic and progressive institution with a strong commitment to academic excellence. Alabama A&M University is a leading producer of African-American Ph.D.’s in Physics and the nation’s leading producer for African-American Ph.D.’s in Plant and Soil Science. Its nearly 30-year-old MBA program offers more than 120 students concentrations in finance, accounting economics, logistics, management of information systems and marketing.
