The University of Alabama

A University-wide core curriculum provides a general education component as the keystone of every undergraduate program. Graduate programs, built on these undergraduate foundations, concentrate on the development of original scholarship, research and creative activity. Professional programs, including the State's only public law school, prepare students with high levels of competence for leadership roles. As one of the major residential campuses in the State, the University enhances the academic and personal growth of its students through its on-campus environment.

The University of Alabama is a national leader in the enrollment of National Merit, National Achievement and National Hispanic Scholars, with 198 scholars in the fall 2006 freshman class. These numbers include 83 National Merit Scholars, a 15 percent increase over last year’s 72. The University of Alabama ranked 13th in the nation among public universities in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars in 2005.
