The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) issues the following statement regarding the realignment of four schools on the western side of the campus into one College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). The UAB Chapter of the AAUP wants to emphasize the continuing importance of shared faculty governance related to decisions made within and for the new College, the preservation of academic freedom, and the accepted practices concerning promotion and tenure as posited by the AAUP's 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure. Finally, we emphasize that the new CAS Dean possess the proper academic credentials and experience, and that broad faculty input be an integral part of the hiring process. The UAB AAUP Chapter supports the efforts of faculty members at large and of the UAB Faculty Senate (FS) in working towards the issues outlined in this statement in accordance with accepted professional practice as proffered by the AAUP since its inception in 1915. We also request that the FS share this statement of support with the FS at large and the UAB administration.
