UAB Adds "Gender Identity or Gender Expression" and "Discriminatory Harassment" to its Equal Opportunity Policy.

Nov. 29, 2011

This policy includes protections for "gender identity or gender expression" and prohibits discriminatory harassment.

Dr. Carol Z. Garrison Underscores Support for the LGBT Community

Nov. 14, 2011

UAB's ongoing commitment to its LGBT community, was underscored by Dr. Garrison in the following YouTube video.

"...The LGBT community is an integral part of that robust diversity that helps move this university forward, and it is embraced, valued, and supported on this campus..."
— Former UAB President Carol Z. Garrison

And That's Not All!

Additional changes at UAB are either completed or are in the works. These include:

  • All UAB Human Resource policies that define allowances for spouses and/or children have been modified to include Sponsored Adult Dependents and Children of Sponsored Adult Dependents.
  • Re-organization of the UAB Office for Equity and Diversity's Diversity Council to work through standing subcommittees, one of which is on LGBT issues. The Alliance's Past-President, Dr. James L. Raper, chairs that committee.
  • Members of UAB's administration have been assigned the task of looking into the feasibility of establishing a Diversity Resource Office at UAB.
  • The above video has been placed on the UAB Office for Equity and Diversity's web site, as has a link to the Alliance's web site.

The specifics of these changes can be found in Vice President for Equity and Diversity Dr. Louis Dale's letter, dated November 1, 2011.
