Alabama Bridge to Teaching (BT) Program
The Alabama Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (ALSAMP) is piloting a Bridge to Teaching (BT) program at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) designed to attract graduates from science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines at the baccalaureate level and offer a program in which students may become certified to teach in a STEM discipline at the secondary level and earn a master's degree simultaneously. A total of 17 students will be selected to participate in this pilot program at UAB which is one of only three such programs nationwide.
ALSAMP is one of the six oldest National Science Foundation (NSF) Alliances in the nation and has an infrastructure that is uniquely positioned to implement the BT program. The ALSAMP BT program will utilize a base of 11 universities and colleges within the state, all with teacher education programs, the UAB School of Education with a large active faculty including degree education programs at all levels, several nationally funded teaching training programs and a cooperative working relationship with the Birmingham City Schools. Upon completion of the ALSAMP BT program, students will be in an excellent position for career advancement.
