The following is a list of scholarship and fellowship opportunities of potential interest to undergraduate and graduate students. The British Marshall Scholarships

Website: www.marshallscholarship.org
Purpose: Students study for two years at a university in the UK; all disciplines
Value of Award: Tuition, fees, book grant, travel money, and personal allowance for two years of study, amounting to about $34,000 per year.
Number of Awards: 40 (out of approximately 1,200 applicants)
Eligibility: Senior or recent graduate between the ages of 18 and 26; a minimum GPA of 3.7 in courses after the first year; US citizen; university endorsement required
Begin Application: Spring of Junior year
Deadline: Early October of Senior year    

 

Fulbright Grants

Purpose: Students conduct research or advanced study for one year in a foreign country; all disciplines
Value of Award: varies; round-trip transportation, tuition, and allowances for the academic year based on living costs in the host country
Number of Awards: over 700
Eligibility: Senior or graduate; US citizen; language proficiency sufficient to communicate with people of host country (see Fulbright bulletin for details); preference given to candidates who have not resided in the country to which they are applying for more than six months
Begin Application: Spring of Junior year
Deadline: October of Senior year

 

The Gates Cambridge Scholarships

Purpose: Students pursue graduate study (or a second Bachelor’s degree as an affiliated student) at the University of Cambridge
Value of Award: University and college fees, maintenance allowance sufficient for a single student
Number of Awards:
Eligibility: Applicant must gain admissions to Cambridge University in order to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship; must be under 30 years of age; students from every country in the world (except the UK) may apply. The Gates Foundation is particularly interested in supporting those who may one day help solve global problems related to health, equity, technology and learning.
Begin Application: Spring of Junior year
Deadline: October of Senior year

 

The George Mitchell Scholarships

Purpose: Students pursue one academic year of graduate study in a university in Ireland or Northern Ireland; all disciplines
Value of Award: Tuition, room and a $11,000 living/traveling stipend
Number of Awards: 12
Eligibility:Intellectual distinction, leadership, community service, character
Begin Application: Spring of Junior year
Deadline: October of Senior year 
 

Jacob K. Javits Fellowships

Purpose: Students are supported in pursuit of doctoral degrees in the humanities, arts, and social sciences
Value of Award: tuition waiver and stipend (based on financial need) for up to four years: institutional payment approximately $10,000 and maximum stipend $15,000 per annum
Number of Awards: 30 new awards each year
Eligibility: Senior or Graduate; GRE (general test only) required
Begin Application: Spring of Junior year
Deadline: November of Senior year


The Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies

[program was suspended in 2006, but may become available later]

Purpose: Students in the humanities who are preparing for careers in teaching and scholarship are supported during the first year of their doctoral programs.
Value of Award: $17,500 for first year only of a Ph.D. program in the US or Canada
Number of Awards: up to 80
Eligibility: Seniors or recent graduates; high GPA; high GRE scores (general test only); candidates must be applying to a graduate program leading to a Ph.D. in an eligible field, i.e., American studies, art history, classics, comparative literature, cultural anthropology, English literature, foreign languages and literature, history, history and philosophy of science, musicology, philosophy, political philosophy, and religious studies
Begin Application:  Spring of Junior year
Deadline: December of Senior year


National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships

Purpose: Students study and conduct research in the sciences, mathematics, or engineering leading to a master’s or doctoral degree
Value of Award: three years of graduate support worth over $120,000 which includes a $30,000 annual stipend for each 12-month tenure and $10,500 a cost-of-education allowance per tenure for up to three years; a $1000 one time travel allowance is included; renewals dependent upon satisfactory academic progress
Number of Awards: Approximately 900
Eligibility: High GPA; general and subject GRE tests; departmental support; evidence of original and creative work; students from minority groups and women in engineering or computer science are particularly encouraged to apply
Begin Application: Spring of Junior year
Deadline: early November of Senior year


Phi Kappa Phi Scholarships

Purpose: Students are supported for the first year of graduate study
Value of Award: $8,000
Number of Awards: 50
Eligibility: Senior; Phi Kappa Phi member; 3.85-4.00 GPA; leadership record
Begin Application:  Fall of Senior year
Deadline: February of Senior year


The Rhodes Scholarships

Purpose: Students pursue two years of graduate study in any field at Oxford University
Value of Award: tuition, transportation to and from Oxford, and maintenance allowance of $21,000 per year
Number of Awards: 32 in the US (out of more than 1,200 applicants)
Eligibility: Senior or recent graduate between the ages of 18 and 24; university nomination required; US citizen; leadership and community service; physical vigor
Begin Application:   Must be nominated by the university selection committee in the spring of the Junior year
Deadline: October of Senior year


Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships (Undergraduate)

Purpose: Students study in a foreign country where Rotary clubs are located  for 3 months, 6 months, or, depending upon the policy of the district in which they apply, one year (a junior year abroad option)
Value of Award: Tuition, round-trip transportation, room and board; ranges between $10,000 and $23,000 depending upon length of stay and actual costs at the assigned institution of study
Number of Awards: Availability of scholarships is determined by each Rotary district and varies from year to year
Eligibility: Applicants must have completed at least two years of university course work; language requirements vary depending on the type of scholarship; affiliates of Rotary are ineligible
Begin Application:   To use this scholarship in the junior year, one must apply as a freshman and in the senior year, as a sophomore
Deadline: Application deadlines are set by individual Rotary clubs and may be as early as March or as late as July; applicants must contact local Rotary club to inquire if and what kind of scholarships are available and to determine local application deadlines
 
Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships (Graduate)

Purpose: Students study in a foreign country where Rotary clubs are located for 3 months, 6 months, one year, or several years
Value of Award: Tuition, round-trip transportation, room and board; amount varies according to length of stay and actual costs at the assigned study institution
Number of Awards: Availability of scholarships is determined by each Rotary district and varies from year to year
Eligibility: Juniors; language requirements vary depending on the type of scholarship; affiliates of Rotary are ineligible
Begin Application:  To use this scholarship for the year after graduation, one must apply as a junior
Deadline: Application deadlines are set by individual Rotary clubs and may be as early as March or as late as July; applicants must contact local Rotary club to inquire if and what kind of scholarships are available and to determine local application deadlines


The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

Purpose: Students who are New Americans pursue graduate study in the US in any professional field or scholarly discipline in the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences (including medical school)
Value of Award: Maintenance grant of $20,000 and a tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost of the graduate program attended by fellow; funding for up to two years
Number of Awards: 30 (out of 740 applicants)
Eligibility: Senior or recent graduate under 30 years of age; applicant must be a New American, i.e., a resident alien, a naturalized citizen of the US, or the child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens
Begin Application:  Spring of Junior Year
Deadline: November of Senior year


The Harry S. Truman Scholarships

Purpose: Students pursue graduate studies that lead to careers in government or public service
Value of Award: $3,000 for the senior year and a further $27,000 for graduate school (including law, business, and medical school)
Number of Awards: 75-80
Eligibility: high GPA; record of service activities, potential for leadership; US citizen; university nomination required
Begin Application:  Must be nominated by university selection committee in the spring of the Sophomore year
Deadline: January of Junior year
