Historical Note: Born in Marion, Alabama, on 14 July 1914, Howard Lamar Holley attended the University of South Carolina where he earned a B.S. in 1935. He later earned his M.D. from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1941. He interned at the U.S. Marine Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, from 1941 to 1942 and until 1945 he served as a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service. Holley returned to Alabama in 1945 and completed a residency at University Hospital in 1947. In 1946 and 1947, he also served as an instructor in the Department of Medicine of the Medical College of Alabama. He earned a faculty position in the department in 1948 and remained with the Medical College (the School of Medicine after 1969) for the remainder of his career eventually serving as director of the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology from 1955 to 1970. Holley gained a national reputation earning the respect of fellow physicians and his patients alike. After 1970, he held the Anna Lois Waters Chair of Rheumatology. Always interested in the history of medicine, Holley published the History of Medicine in Alabama in 1982. During his lifetime, he was devoted to the practice of medicine and collected much information about the development of the Medical College of Alabama from 1859 to the 1980s and about the history of medicine in Alabama. He also edited the letters of Sir William Osler to Milburn which were published as A Continual Remembrance. Holley died in Birmingham, Alabama, in March 1988.

Provenance: These materials were collected by Dr. Howard L. Holley and were donated to the Jefferson County Medical Society/UAB Health Sciences Archives in the 1980s. The materials remained unprocessed until their transfer to the UAB Archives in 1994 after the JCMS/UAB Health Sciences Archives was disbanded.
