Biology Undergraduate Course Descriptions A schedule of courses that will be offered each term is available in the department office. Prerequisite: BY 123 and BY 124 with C or better or BY 123 and BME major Credit hours: 3 BY 213- Phage Genomics I Credit hours:4 This course is the second semester of a year-long lecture, laboratory, and web-enhanced class designed to provide an authentic research experience for undergraduate students. Students will learn the concepts and procedures for: annotating segments of a unique mycobacteriophage genome to indentify open reading frames, genes, and regulatory sequences; compare this bacteriophage genome to other sequenced bacteriophage genomes; compare and analyze amino acid sequences to reveal relationships between species; writing and presentation of scientific results. BY 269 - Rain Forest Ecology Physical and environmental factors that structure rain forest, biodiversity of life, and interactions of its organisms. Prominent biota. BY 362 - Neurobiology Biological basis of nervous system function. Comparative approach applying molecular, cellular, and systems concepts to nervous system function to examine electrical and chemical signaling, neural circuitry, and cellular basis of behavior and neural development (irregular offering). BY 394-Bio Lab Teach Student will assist in instruction of a biology laboratory. Student is required to attend scheduled preparatory sessions each week, assist in teach assigned laboratory section, help develop student assignments such as examinations and/or practical’s and assist the laboratory coordinator in other capacities as assigned. Students work under the direction of the course instructor and/or the laboratory coordinator. May be repeated for credit to maximum of three semester hours. Prerequisite: Completion of the course in which the student is assisting with a grade of B or higher and permission of the instructor. Credit hours: 1-3
BY 395 - Special Topics in Biology This course will consider topics from the various disciplines in the biological sciences and the topic will differ each term. Course requirements may include lecture, laboratory, readings, discussion, reporting, and internships or fieldwork, which may be conducted on- or off-campus. May be taken more than once for credit. Prerequisite: BY 123, BY 124, and BY 210 Credit hours: 1 to 3
BY 397 - Advanced Directed Readings Reading and independent study in selected areas under supervision of faculty sponsor. May be repeated for total of three semester hours credit. Prerequisite: 12 semester hours of BY with BY GPA of 3.0 and permission of instructor. Credit hours: 1 to 3

BY 407 - Microbial Ecology Microorganisms in nature; interactions with each other and with environment. Prerequisite: BY 271 Credit hours: 3
Physiological processes occurring at cell, tissue, organ, and system levels in mammals with emphasis on humans. Students that enroll in this capstone experience will be expected to do additional work to fulfill their biology capstone requirement. Lecture and Laboratory. BY 410 - Comparative Animal Physiology Comparative examples to illustrate general principles of physiology; study of how animals function in their environment. Prerequisite: BY 256 or permission of instructor. Credit hours: 3
BY 411 Advanced Human Anatomy This course will provide students with an interest in medical and health sciences a detailed examination of human anatomy. The lecture/seminar will correlate detailed knowledge of human anatomy with cutting-edge surgical and medical advances including hypothermic treatment of spinal cord trauma, bioengineering of synthetic scaffolds for organ and limb regeneration and nano-particle drug delivery systems. Laboratory sessions will be devoted to focused observation of prosected cadavers and small student-team dissection of entire cadavers. Prerequisite: BY 115 and junior standing or permission of the instructor. Credit Hours: 3
BY 415 - Ecology-Epidemiology of Arthropod Born Diseases This course covers the ecology, epidemiology, & control of arthropods and the pathogens they transmit to humans and animals. Special emphasis will be placed on emerging and re-emerging pathogens such as: dengue, yellow fever, bartonella, Rift Valley fever, typhus, & Chagas disease. The laboratory will reinforce the lectures with hands-on identification of both arthropods and pathogens. Lecture and Lab. Prerequisite: BY 210 Credit Hours: 3

BY 420 - General Endocrinology Roles of endocrine and neuroendocrine chemical messengers in the control of physiological processes. Prerequisite: BY 256 or Permission of Instructor. BY 480 - Emergency Med Internship This semester-long internship is designed to provide undergraduate students with an authentic hands-on medical research experience. The course will allow students the opportunity to assist faculty members and residents of the UAB Department of Emergency Medicine in their clinical research studies. Specifically, students will be involved in patient recruitment for the study, determine patient eligibility, reading information about the studies to patients, and collecting data regarding patient history. Students will also have the methodology associated with clinical research. Prerequisites: Junior or senior stand & minimum GPA of 3.5; completed application and acceptance into the internship program. Credit Hours: 3 BY 494 Undergraduate Research - Capstone Experience Research project under supervision of faculty sponsor.
