Jonathan Howard Amsbary is a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He serves as the Graduate Director for the Communication Management M.A. program. He holds a B.A. in Psychology and Speech Communication from the University of New Mexico (1978); a M.A. in Speech Communication from Indiana University (1980); and a Ph.D. in Speech Communication from Indiana University (1986). He completed the Master Teacher seminar in 2005.

He has had twenty articles and two communication books published.

He has taught at The University of New Mexico, Indiana University, The University of Hawaii, North Dakota State University and The University of Alabama at Birmingham for more than thirtysix years. He has been a Visiting Faculty member at the University of Alabama and Ramkhamhaeng University in Bangkok, Thailand. He was nominated for the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award and was named the Teacher of the Year for the Department of Communication Studies in 1996. He has taught a variety of courses on the graduate and undergraduate level; mostly in the applied areas of Communication Theory and research.

He has coached debate for Sandia High School, Albuquerque, New Mexico and Indiana University.
