Torin Alter is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. He specializes in the philosophy of language and has published widely on the nature of consciousness and the mind-body problem.

Abstract: Russellian monism offers a distinctive perspective on the relationship between consciousness and the physical world.  For example, on one version of the view, properties of consciousness form the categorical bases of fundamental physical properties, such as mass and charge, which are dispositional.  This leads to surprising - some would say insane -  results, such as the view experience everywhere.  Neverthless, I will suggest, in this area a little insanity might be called for.
