Dr. Sloan is Chairperson of the Department of Justice Sciences, where he a Professor of Criminal Justice. He also holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Sociology.

His research interests include crime and security issues on college and university campuses; fear and perceived risk of victimization; criminal justice policy; and specialized police agencies. His research has been funded by the National Institute of Justice, the Bureau of Justice Assistance, and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), and by state and local agencies in Alabama. His work has been published in such journals as Criminology, Justice Quarterly, Social Forces, and Crime and Delinquency.

His most recent book (with Bonnie S. Fisher) is Campus Crime: Legal, Social, and Policy Perspectives 3ed (2013; Charles C. Thomas, Publisher).
