College of Arts and Sciences University Professor, Chair of Psychology, and Director of the Center for Research on Applied Gerontology, Karlene K. Ball, Ph.D., has been named as endowed chair in developmental psychology by The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees.
Dr. Ball is an internationally renowned expert on developmental change in cognition associated with aging. Her research has resulted in discoveries that span the disciplines of cognitive psychology, human factors, injury prevention, basic and applied gerontology, vision science, and transportation research. Dr. Ball has spent her career taking real world problems and finding solutions that improve the everyday functioning of older adults.
Her work has recently become the focus of a nationwide trend in neural plasticity and brain fitness.

As you are aware, that CAS has recently stepped up its efforts to promote interdisciplinary dialogue/collaborations in the College and across UAB Campus. During Phase I of this initiative, we have been organizing monthly innovation forums since January 2012. This effort will continue into the future (presentations from past innovation forums can be found here). As part of Phase II development of this program, CAS is now issuing a call for interdisciplinary team proposals.
Awards up to $30,000 for a maximum duration of up to one year will be made under this solicitation. CAS anticipates funding five such awards during the 2012-2013 academic year. Click here to access proposal submission details .

The College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office and Office of Research and Economic Development are helping UAB’s musicians and creative writers to make music, to write, and to publicize their arts. Associate Dean Rebecca Bach has been working with the Music and English Departments to fund these efforts.
Funded projects include the commissioning of a new choral and steel drum work celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. UAB’s Choral Director, Brian Kittredge, will premiere this work next January. One of our opera singers, Won Cho, is being funded to perform in Milan and to have his arias recorded on a CD produced there.
Closer to home, writer Kerry Madden will be touring Alabama libraries with her children’s book “Nothing Fancy About Charlie and Kathryn,” a book which tells a beautiful story about a friendship between an Alabama storyteller, Kathryn Tucker Windham, and Alabama folk artist, Charlie Lucas. April 20, 2012 marked the two-year anniversary of the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. University of Alabama at Birmingham researchers continue to seek solutions and measure the impact of the Deepwater Horizon disaster even as public attention drifts.
“We created the UAB Gulf Oil Response Initiative to allow our world-class researchers to study the long-term effect the oil spill has on the environment and the community,” said Thomas M. DiLorenzo, Ph.D., dean of the UAB College of Arts and Sciences.
Minimizing future disasters
Eugenia Kharlampieva, Ph.D., works with nanotechnology in the Department of Chemistry. It is hard to imagine nanotechnology, the study of matter on a molecular scale, having an impact on an oil spill that covered 580 square miles, but that dream is near reality.
