The Barksdale-Maynard Endowed Creative Writing Prize
The Barksdale-Maynard Prizes in Fiction and Poetry are made possible by a gift from Isabel Barksdale-Maynard in honor of her family. These Endowed Creative Writing Prizes are given out annually to students who achieve excellence in fiction and poetry in the Department of English. .
The English Endowed Recruiting Scholarship
Applicants for the English Endowed Recruiting Scholarship must be entering freshman to UAB and enrolled in the Department of English and must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.
The Gloria Goldstein Howton Scholarship Endowment Fund
Applicants for the Howton Scholarship must be enrolled in the Department of English’s Graduate Program and have an interest in creative writing and must maintain at least at 3.0 grade point average.

Applicants for the Grace Lindsley Waits Scholarship Fund should be enrolled in the Department of English and should be a rising senior majoring in English and should demonstrate solid academic credentials.
The Tom Brown Prize for Creative Nonfiction
This prize is named in honor of Dr. Thomas H. Brown, chair of the English Department from 1984-1992 Prizes of $200 each are awarded annually for the best work of short fiction, creative nonfiction, and the best poem or group of poems submitted by currently enrolled UAB students in good standing with the University.
