BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN CYTOTECHNOLOGY

Program Information

Accreditation: Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in collaboration with the Cytotechnology Programs Review Committee of the American Society of Cytology.

Credentials Conferred: Diplomas -- The Bachelor of Science degree and a certificate of completion are awarded by the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Professional Certification: Graduates are eligible to apply for the cytotechnologist certification examination of the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Length of Study: Preprofessional Phase--Nine quarters. Professional Phase in SHRP--Four quarters.

Professional Phase Information Program Entrance Date: Fall term.

Application Deadline: Completed applications received by February 28 preceding the expected date of enrollment are given first priority. Applications received after February 28 are considered on a space-available basis.

An Early Admission Program is available to students who qualify.

Application Procedure: The following materials must be submitted.

To UAB Undergraduate Admissions Office:

• completed UAB undergraduate application form indicating pre-cytotechnology as major and fee, if applicable. If enrolled at UAB in another major, complete a Change of Major form indicating pre-cytotechnology as major (form available from Registrar's Office), and
• official transcripts from each college or university attended.

To Cytotechnology Program Office, School of Health Related Professions Building, Room 381:

• completed application to the professional phase of the Cytotechnology Program (form available from program office).

Requirements for Admission: The student usually will have completed 80 semester hours before enrolling in SHRP for four terms of professional courses. Acceptance will be based upon the student's academic ability and aptitude for a career as a cytotechnologist. The candidate is expected to satisfy the following requirements.

• a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.4 (A=4.0) in arts and humanities and social and behavioral sciences,
• a minimum grade point average of 2.4 in natural sciences and mathematics prerequisites, calculated on all hours attempted,
• a minimum grade of C in each prerequisite course,
• an interview with the Selection Committee, and
• if accepted, completion of UAB medical history questionnaire and physical, to include required immunizations, with satisfactory screening by the UAB Medical Center Student Health Service.

Essential Requirements: Fundamental tasks that must be performed to successfully complete the program, have been outlined and are available upon request from the program.

Program Prerequisites:

Courses must meet the Alabama General Core requirements to be acceptable toward a baccalaureate degree.

* A two course sequence must be taken in either literature or history.

**Courses must be those required for a major, including laboratory.

A person who holds a baccalaureate degree and wishes to become a cytotechnologist will be considered for admission to the professional phase. Prerequisites for such persons include the equivalent of the courses in natural sciences and mathematics and the other admission requirements. Upon graduation, a certificate of completion will be awarded by the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
