Accreditation: Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in collaboration with the Cytotechnology Programs Review Committee of the American Society of Cytology.
Credentials Conferred: Diplomas -- The Bachelor of Science degree and a certificate of completion are awarded by the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Professional Certification: Graduates are eligible to apply for the cytotechnologist certification examination of the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
Length of Study: Preprofessional Phase--Nine quarters. Professional Phase in SHRP--Four quarters.
Professional Phase Information Program Entrance Date: Fall term.
Application Deadline: Completed applications received by February 28 preceding the expected date of enrollment are given first priority. Applications received after February 28 are considered on a space-available basis.
An Early Admission Program is
available to students who qualify.

Requirements for Admission: The student usually will have completed 80 semester hours before enrolling in SHRP for four terms of professional courses. Acceptance will be based upon the student's academic ability and aptitude for a career as a cytotechnologist. The candidate is expected to satisfy the following requirements.
Essential Requirements: Fundamental tasks that must be performed to successfully complete the program, have been outlined and are available upon request from the program.

Courses must meet the Alabama General Core requirements to be
acceptable toward a baccalaureate degree.

A person who holds a baccalaureate degree and wishes to become
a cytotechnologist will be considered for admission to the
professional phase. Prerequisites for such persons include the
equivalent of the courses in natural sciences and mathematics and
the other admission requirements. Upon graduation, a certificate
of completion will be awarded by the University of Alabama at
Birmingham.
