Student/Mentor Assignments

On Day 2 of the program, all of the participating faculty will make PowerPoint presentations to the REU participants. This event plays the most pivotal role in assigning participants to a faculty mentor. Each faculty mentor’s presentation will describe a research project that an REU may take part.

Participants may be interested in more than one project, but should narrow their choices down to three (3) and then plan to meet with the faculty member(s) that have a project for which an REU is interested. Once participants have met with the faculty, a mutual decision will be made with regard to who will be paired with a particular mentor.

We find that it is better to have participants play a role in selecting a mentor as opposed to just assigning mentors without any input from the REUs. This helps to eliminate the chance of REUs and mentors being matched to a project for which the REU has not interest.
