Two of the largest vision-related organizations in Alabama, the Alabama Eye Bank and the UAB Department of Ophthalmology, have collaborated to establish the Matthew W. Mosteller, M.D., Endowed Fellowship in Cornea and External Disease in honor of the longtime Mobile, Alabama, ophthalmologist and eye surgeon. This endowment will provide training and education for future cornea specialists in Alabama and around the country. Other donors supporting the fellowship include the Springhill Medical Center, the Mobile medical community, and family, friends, and grateful patients of Dr. Mosteller.

Mosteller has made a significant impact on the practice of cornea and refractive surgery and was also instrumental in growing the Alabama Eye Bank in Mobile, which is ranked among the world’s top five eye banks. He is a nationally regarded expert on lamellar cornea transplants for cornea edema and helped establish acceptance of this new procedure and technique.

“This fellowship provides us with a way to attract high-quality fellows in the area of cornea and external disease,” says Lanning Kline, M.D., chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology. “The fact that it’s endowed makes it that much more prestigious and adds to the reputation of the Department of Ophthalmology. This is a wonderful honor for Dr. Mosteller and a very appropriate way to recognize the accomplishments he’s made in his field.”
