Off to a Great Start
Inaugural Group of Energen First Scholars Welcomed to UAB
Thanks to the Energen First Scholars Program, some students will be the first in their families to attend college. From a $1.5-million pledge, Energen Corporation gave $500,000 each to UAB, The University of Alabama, and Auburn University.
The first scholarships were awarded in the fall of 2008, and the UAB recipients were recognized at a luncheon on October 31. These Energen First Scholars received awards that will cover the cost of attending college for four full academic years.
“I firmly believe we will see each of these students flourish at UAB because of this support,” says Shirley Salloway Kahn, Ph.D., vice president for development, alumni, and external relations. “These students are all excited about this award. It gives them great encouragement, knowing that others believe in them and their goals. We thank James McManus and Energen for their belief in these young students and their ongoing support of UAB.”
The Energen First Scholars Program is the largest program to date that the company has offered as a single contribution to universities.
