Ghayas Habach, M.D., a nephrologist in Sylacauga and Talladega, Alabama, who is originally from Syria, has made a significant commitment to help the UAB Division of Nephrology complete an endowment project in transplant nephrology. Habach, who has had a longstanding professional/referral relationship with the division, pledged $100,000 toward the Endowed Professorship in Transplant Nephrology, to be named for former division director Robert G. Luke, M.D., when the corpus reaches chair level.

“Our division is most fortunate to enjoy strong relationships with the practice community, not only with physicians who received training at UAB, but also those who trained elsewhere,” says Anupam Agarwal, M.D., division director and Thomas E. Andreoli Endowed Professor of Nephrology. “Dr. Habach’s gift has brought us within reach of our goal for this endowment, and we are deeply grateful for his support of our program.”

Additional gifts to the endowment have been made in honor of John Curtis, M.D., upon his appointment as professor emeritus. Until his retirement, Curtis held the endowed professorship that will be named for Luke, who recruited Curtis to UAB 30 years ago.
