A Partnership for Art

UAB Center for Palliative Care Hosts New Fund-Raiser

Held on September 10, 2009, at Bare Hands Gallery by the UAB Center for Palliative Care, the inaugural Artinis event afforded guests the opportunity to take home a selection of art from local artists and enjoy complimentary “artinis.” Funds raised by the event benefit the center’s Art Therapy Partnership by providing supplies for creative projects and supporting art-therapy staffing and the Legacy Art Station, a family-friendly space located in the UAB Palliative and Comfort Care Unit. The Art Therapy Partnership pairs the center with VSA arts of Alabama, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing opportunities in the arts for people with chronic illnesses and disabilities.

“Our partnership with VSA continues to provide an added dimension to the holistic care model for our patients, their families, and our staff,” says Rodney Tucker, M.D., medical director at the center. “The ability to explore emotional expression through an artistic outlet with a trained professional through VSA adds tremendously to the experience of those facing advanced illness as well as the ones who care for them.”

Members of the Artinis Host Committee included Laura Cardwell, Tammy and Victor Childers, Billy Connelley, Tobin Greene, Heather Herrington, Stephen Howell, David James, Tracy Ormond, Marc Perlman, Carla and Sam Perna, Rodney Tucker, Debbie and Eric Walker, Jennifer Wood, and Stella Woods. The event was sponsored by WABM My68, with additional sponsorships by al.com, B&A Warehouse, Fire & Ice, and Rojo.
