AboutThe Children’s Creative Learning Center, a six week summer enrichment program, has been in existence for 41 years. Serving children from all over the Birmingham area, the enrichment program seeks to encourage children to select their daily plan of study, work at their own pace, and enhance their academic development. Whether it is a science experiment with everyday food items or writing and publishing a newspaper, children discover how exciting learning can be.
HistoryDr. Virginia Horns-Marsh was the driving force behind the initiation of the program. After 25 years of work, she asked Dr. Lynn Kirkland to take over the directorship for the next 15 years. One of the faculty members brought to the program because of her knowledge in literacy instruction was Ms. Jennifer Summerlin, who currently serves as director. As a doctoral student in the ECE Ph.D program and an instructor in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction, she continues the rich tradition of the CCLC, rethinking the needs of each site.
2015 Movers and Makers Summer ProgramThe UAB Children's Creative Learning Center in partnership with The Vestavia Hills Extended Day Program presents the 2015 Summer Enrichment Program: Movers and Makers. This enrichment program serves children in the Vestavia City Schools system ages 4 through rising 6th grade. The enrichment program seeks to encourage children to work at their own pace while master-level teachers enhance their academic development. Whether it is a science experiment with everday items or writing and publishing their own newspaper, children discover how exciting learning can be when they are actively engaged in authentic purposes for learning.
