The Alternative Master’s Program (AMP) is designed for individuals who hold an undergraduate degree in a field outside of education and who want to become certified teachers with a master’s degree in education (M.A.Ed.). The AMP is offered in the following areas:


The following are required for consideration for admission to all teaching fields in the Alternative Master's Program (AMP):

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (unrounded) on the degree-issuing undergraduate transcript (or 3.0 on a graduate transcript) from a regionally accredited college.
  • Attend information session (Register Now)
  • Complete criminal background clearance. (Read More)
  • Passing score on Praxis Subject test(s) (formerly Praxis II) in projected teaching field
    • Test codes and passing scores: Visit the Praxis website's page about Alabama Educator Preparation Program Approach. Scroll down to Tests required for specific certification areas; click on grade level (e.g., Secondary) and teaching field (e.g., Math). Because of periodic changes in codes and scores, you must visit this website before registering to take a test to confirm requirements on your testing date.
  • Have official transcripts from all colleges attended, including individual/single course(s). Transcripts can be emailed or mailed to the Office of Student Services.

  • Complete your application for admission to the UAB Graduate School.
  • Respond promptly to all emails received from UAB and follow through with instructions (e.g., confirming an admissions interview).
