Clinical Practices "Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers Today" Partnership Interest Forum
The forum was held at A. H. Parker High School, Birmingham, AL on Thursday, March 15, 2012. Participants included the School of Education faculty and principals and administrators from Shelby, Birmingham, St. Clair and Tarrant school districts. Two focus questions that lead the forum discussions were: (1) What do effective teachers look like in your school? and (2) How do we share in the responsibility to prepare more effective teachers? Based on participants’ feedback this forum served as an essential pathway in strengthening and promoting future collaborative efforts.

Governor’s First Teacher Cabinet Meeting Held at UAB School of Education, Friday, February 24, 2012
Governor Bentley held the first Teacher’s Cabinet meeting at UAB School of Education on Friday, February 24, 2012. The Teacher’s Cabinet is being created to advise the Governor on education issues and begin a direct line of communication between the Governor and teachers throughout the state. He will hold eight Cabinet meetings across the state between now and May 1st. Each meeting will involve 6-8 teachers. Upon completion of all meetings, 1-2 members will be invited to Montgomery quarterly to consult with the Governor on an ongoing basis.
Dr. Boyd Rogan, Director of Region 5 Regional In-service Center located in the UAB School of Education, along with other ALSDE directors of in-service centers have been incredibly helpful in making sure the Governor’s office is considering all of the variables involved in gathering authentic teacher feedback.

The International Council for Exceptional Children Division on Visual Impairments has announced the 2012 International awards to be presented in Denver, April 2012. UAB has three awardees!

Carol Allison –The Distinguished Service Award, Carol is faculty in the UAB School of Education where she teaches in the Program for Visual Impairments and is Coordinator of the UAB Alabama Deafblind Project. She is also the Chair of the Alabama and International Helen Keller Art Shows.

Cristal White Smith - The Teacher of the Year Award, Cristal is a UAB graduate from Dothan, AL. she works with school districts in the Alabama Wiregrass area as an itinerant vision teacher. She is also an Orientation & Mobility Specialist and supervises student teachers. Cristal was awarded the School of Education Special Education Alumni of the Year last year. |

Trenisha Reynolds - The Virginia M. Sowell Student of the Year Award, Trenisha is a SOE graduate student in Visual Impairments Special Education. She is currently completing her practicum in visual impairments and starting Orientation & Mobility course work to become nationally certified. |

Please join in celebrating each of the award winner’s service and accomplishments. We are honored that an organization will award so many persons from one institution. |

Dr. Kathleen Martin named associate professor emerita in the School of Education |

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees appointed Kathleen A. Martin, Ph.D., associate professor emerita in School of Education in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences during its meeting Nov. 3, 2011. Martin was the primary investigator and director of one of the largest Early Reading First grants in the United States.

Dr. Jennifer Kilgo Awarded $1.25 Million Grant |

Jennifer Kilgo, Ph.D., professor of curriculum and instruction in the UAB School of Education, has been awarded a $1.25 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The funds will be used to prepare early childhood special educators as well as physical and occupational therapists with training on team-based services to infants, toddlers and preschool-aged children with disabilities and their families. This award is part of the Special Education--Personnel Development to Improve Services and Results for Children with Disabilities Program.
