More Information on Costs, Refunds, Insurance, and Immunizations
IEP Tuition and Fees
This amount includes the cost of your courses, your Language Enrichment Activities, the IEP Student Activities provided by the program, and all of your UAB fees. It is all-inclusive and not divisible. There is no distinction between in-state and out-of-state tuition costs for the IEP.
Refund policy: If you withdraw before orientation/placement dates, then all of the IEP tuition and fees is refundable with the exception of the $200 deposit.
If you withdraw at any time from the beginning of orientation/placement through the 4th date of classes, then all but $625 is refundable ($200 deposit plus $425 cancellation fee) of the IEP tuition and fees.
After the 4th day of classes, no tuition refunds are given.
Payment of tuition and fees is due in full before you can start your classes. You must make plans to pay your tuition and fees during IEP Orientation. The only exception to this is for students who have full sponsorship from their government, embassy, or company.
Books and Materials
Books for the IEP are available in the UAB Barnes and Noble bookstore. Students are welcome to purchase their books from another vendor, but they must have their books by the end of the first full week of classes. The IEP cannot tell students what books they need until after they have been placed into classes.
Extra courses are available to IEP students at a greatly reduced rate of $100 per course. The courses offered vary per semester.
UAB requires that all international students have appropriate medical insurance, and UAB offers a reasonably priced student insurance plan for any student to purchase. The cost of medical care in the US is very high, and you must have insurance while you are here in the event of a serious illness or emergency. If you feel you have appropriate medical insurance that will pay for something that happens in the US, you may bring a copy of the policy for review by UAB. However, you may still be required to purchase UAB student insurance.
You purchase your insurance during Orientation for the entire semester you are beginning (or 8-week session), and you will be provided with a summary of the insurance plan at that time.
On Campus Housing
On-campus housing at UAB is available to early applicants; space is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The costs listed here reflect the range of costs of on-campus housing. Local apartment finding agencies are also available free of charge to help students locate apartments, many of which are within walking distance of the campus. The IEP provides information to students on how to contact these services for assistance. Please see Housing for IEP Students for more information.
Campus Meal and Dining Fee
Students who live on campus are required to purchase a meal plan. However, the range of meal plans offered is vast. There are small kitchens in each room, so students may be able to purchase a smaller plan if they like to cook. If they do this, however, students must plan for the total amount of food they will need to live, not just the amount for the meal plan.
Certain immunizations are required for UAB international students. If you do not have proof of immunization, you will be required to be immunized. The cost can vary between $30 and $340, depending on what immunizations you need. All students must have two TB skin tests upon arrival, which are $15 each. For more information on UAB immunization requirements, please read this description for semester (or longer) international students. If you are only planning to study for 8 weeks, then you can read this description for short-term international students.
