INTRODUCTION

A message from the Residency Director,
Dr. Andrew Edwards:

The purpose of this website is to inform the applicant for Emergency Medicine training of the opportunities at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Through this website, we hope to impart important knowledge regarding the quality of emergency patient care at this medical center, in addition to the scope and purpose of the Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program in general. This website contains essential information regarding the facilities at this medical center and how they relate to emergency medicine, and important information regarding the process of application for house-staff appointment.

Instituted in 2001, the UAB Emergency Medicine Residency Program is an integral portion of the professional life of the faculty and staff of the emergency department at two component hospitals at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center. The training of emergency medicine housestaff, housestaff from other disciplines, medical students, nursing students, and emergency medical technician students is one of the key functions of the Department of Emergency Medicine, and ranks second in importance only to the provision of direct patient care.

The goal of this program is to accomplish the training of medical graduates in the wide variety of pathologic conditions that are manifest in the Emergency Department setting, and to instill the confidence and self-discipline necessary to enable our emergency medicine residents to become competent Emergency Medicine specialists upon completion of residency. Obviously, the emergency physician must be accomplished in the presentation, treatment, and subsequent disposition of a wide spectrum of patients varying from critical to minor in severity of illness or injury. The breadth of medical knowledge required for the proper treatment of such patients must be combined with an awareness of the psychological, social, and other needs of Emergency Department patients. The emergency physician with such experience becomes a true specialist in the efficient diagnosis and therapy of human illness.
