The major clinical facility within the Medical Center is the University of Alabama Hospital, consisting of approximately 900 beds in three separate structures. Largest is the Jefferson Tower, a 17-story building containing the Department of Emergency Medicine. The second component Emergency Department is situated in the Childrens Hospital of Alabama, a 190-bed pediatric specialty hospital. With a combined volume of more than 123,000 pediatric and adult patients, the resident will have exposure to a broad and deep variety of critical and non-critical adult and pediatric illnesses and injuries. Through a carefully graduated learning experience, the resident is provided appropriate direction and teaching to many disease states first at a basic level, progressing to increased patient care responsibilities. With the construction of the new, state-of-the-art emergency
department and 850,000-square-foot health-care facility (North Pavilion)
which opened in 2004, UAB now has treatment areas and facilities ready
for the latest advances in medical technology.
