Submission InformationUnsolicited manuscripts of no more than five poems are welcomed but must be accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope for consideration. Deadlines are December 1 and June 1, but we read manuscripts year-round. We cannot honor International Reply Coupons. At the present time, we do not accept electronic submissions. Reprints are permitted with appropriate acknowledgement. All rights revert upon publication. From Poet's Market: Birmingham Poetry Review uses poetry that is, according to editor Robert Collins and associate editor Randy Blythe, of "any style, form, length, or subject. We are biased toward exploring the cutting edge of contemporary poetry. Style is secondary to the energy, the fire, the poem possesses. We don't want poetry with cliché-bound, worn-out language." The magazine is composed of 50 pages, 6" x 9" offset print, with a black and white cover, usually a photograph. The press run is 600 for fall and 500 for spring. Currently, we have over 300 subscriptions.
Guidelines for submission are available for a SASE. Pay is two copies and a one-year subscription. Authors should submit 3-5 poems, without cover letters: "We are impressed by good poetry, not by publication credits." Be absolutely certain that you enclose sufficient postage on your SASE if you expect us to return your work. Simultaneous submissions are not accepted. Reprints are accepted in a very few cases -- translations being the most common. We report on submissions within 1-3 months, and we occasionally comment on rejections. Our editors suggest that beginning writers "Read as much good contemporary poetry, national and international, as you can get your hands on. Then be persistent in finding your own voice."
