The UAB Department of English has a rich heritage of community involvement. For over thirty years, Dr. John Haggerty brought together departmental faculty and area high school teachers for a day of articulation, recognizing the value of a seamless transition from high school to university. Now named in recognition of the devoted service of this former departmental chair, the John J. Haggerty Articulation Conference occurs each Spring. 
More recently, the Department has given a monetary award to an outstanding high school Advanced Placement English Teacher during the Haggerty Conference. This award and others, including student scholarships, are sponsored by the English Advisory Committee. Our Department is also a co-sponsor of the Red Mountain Writing Project for teachers and the Ada Long Creative Writing Workshop for high school students.
Additional events, all open to the public, are UAB BookTalk, UAB Writers' Series, the English Alumni Lecture, and the Haddin Humanities Forum, a School-sponsored lecture series now named to honor its long-time director, Dr. Theodore Haddin.
