Each year the department offers advanced workshops in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. At the graduate level, students can pursue the Masters Degree with a Concentration in Creative Writing. Workshops are also available for both beginning and advanced undergraduates.
Throughout the academic year, the UAB Writers' Series brings a number of nationally acclaimed poets and writers to give readings and visit workshops. Visitors in the past have included Edward Hirsch, Li Young Lee, Ron Wallace, Gerald Barrax, Vance Bourjally, Lynn Emmanuel, Michael Harper, Heather McHugh, Tom Franklin, Robert Bly, Beverly Lowry, Larry Leavis, Andrew Hudgins, Tim O'Brien, Patricia Foster, Gerald Stern, and Larry McMurtry.
The Jemison Lectureship brings distinguished writers to the campus for an extended residency. Visiting faculty have included Leonard Michaels, Ed Ochester, Richard Yeates, and Philip Levine.
The English Department publishes the Birmingham Poetry Review, a nationally recognized poetry magazine, and PMS:poemmemoirstory, a journal of women's writing.
The Program awards the Barksdale-Maynard Prizes in Fiction and Poetry and the Howton Scholarship in Creative Writing. The Program also participates in the Southern Literary Festival in which many undergraduates have won awards over the years.
