Welcome to Graduate Studies in UAB English where we offer concentrations in creative writing, rhetoric and composition, and literature. Our graduate faculty of 23 look forward to working with you this year.
Our students go on to earn PhDs in other universities; go directly from the UAB M.A. to become instructors in high schools and community colleges; or pursue careers as writers, editors, lawyers, or other language-oriented professionals.
The department's location near the center of Alabama's largest city and its flexible course scheduling allow many students to maintain careers outside the University while studying for their degrees during the evenings and weekends. In addition, the M.A. program's division into three distinct concentrations allows each student's plan and progress to be tailored to that student's individual interests and needs.
Committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service, the Department of English of the University of Alabama at Birmingham prepares students to read perceptively, think analytically, and develop effective writing skills essential to a literate society. To advance the mission of an urban research university, our department serves UAB and greater Birmingham by elucidating the structure and history of language, promoting creative expression, and providing an understanding of diverse literary traditions for a multicultural community. Our M.A. program prepares students for doctoral work, college teaching, and careers in other professions. Our assistants have ample opportunities to tutor and teach, acquiring hands-on experiences for their careers.
All our graduate students can work one-on-one with graduate faculty of their choosing. Typical opportunities include preparing for Graduate Research Day, undertaking an individual study course, writing a thesis (Plan I), and submitting work for presentation at regional and national conferences. These opportunities exist in all three of our graduate concentrations:
