The Minor in Creative Writing
The minor in creative writing offers opportunities to write fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction. Students can interact with a nationally recognized faculty as well as with distinguished visiting writers brought to campus by the UAB Writers' Series. Outstanding students may also read and publish their work here and compete for awards. The Department is home to both Birmingham Poetry Review and PMS: poem/memoir/story.
Requirements
To earn a minor in creative writing, pending university approval, a student must complete a total of 18 credit hours in addition to EH101 and 102 and other UAB core requirements:
- EH 205;
- Three courses (9 hours) from EH 304, 305-306, 307-308, 309-310;
- Two courses (6 hours) from EH 405-406, 407-408, 409-410, 417-418.
In order to enroll in a workshop at the 400 level, a student must have taken at least one workshop in that genre at the 300 level or receive permission of the instructor. When courses have two numbers, they may be taken twice for credit by using each course number only once.
Students must achieve a grade of C or higher in all courses applied toward the minor, and at least 12 hours of English courses at the 300 and 400 levels must be taken at UAB.
