The minor in linguistics allows students to investigate the principles that underlie language. A linguistics minor can pursue such diverse topics as grammar, syntax, dialects, language history, sound systems, language acquisition, and language and the brain. Linguistics is quite interdisciplinary, having ties to anthropology, cognitive science, education, foreign language, philosophy, and psychology. Linguistics minors will find their credentials strengthened for the pursuit of law, medicine, education, writing, government service (such as the FBI), professional translation, or diplomacy. Requirements'Old' catalog (2009-2010): To earn a minor in linguistics under the 2009-2010 catalog, a student must complete a total of at least 18 credit hours in addition to EH101 and 102. These hours should include:
Courses that require approval are approved by the Director of Linguistics only when their contents fall within the area described. Students minoring in linguistics must achieve a grade of C or higher in all courses applied toward the minor, and at least 15 hours of courses at the 300 and 400 level must be taken at UAB.
