DBE Supportive Services
Program Description: The Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Supportive Services (DBESS) has the mission of providing technical and management assistance to Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) and Women Business Enterprise (WBE) interested in doing business with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). Each year the DBESS provide up to 3 workshops with topics on Contract Law, QuickBooks and Financial Management, Networking and Marketing, Plan Reading and Bid Estimating, Computer Courses, Certification Courses: OSHA, Erosion Control, Concrete and Landscaping, and Bid Express, to assist the DBE firms in our coverage area. The program seeks to assure that DBE/WBE businesses are equipped with resources and the guidance needed to perform Department of Transportation contracts and compete in today’s competitive markets. Each year the DBESS conducts an on-site visit with each DBE firm in our coverage area, which includes the following counties: Walker, Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Calhoun, Clay, Randolph and Cleburne.
Objective: To increase the total number of minority firms participating in federal-aid highway programs and to contribute to the growth and eventual self-sufficiency of minority firms. The supportive services will provide assistance to ALDOT certified DBE firms in a manner that will increase their participation in the highway construction industry.
- Needs Assessment Forms are utilized in determining the training needs of the DBE firms
- Assist DBE firms in our coverage area with meeting their financial and management needs
- Assess the DBE firm’s progress in the program
- Assist all newly certified DBE firms in our coverage area to develop a business plan
- Assist existing DBE firms with revising, reviewing or developing a business plan
- Conduct seminars and workshops to assist DBE firms with enhancing their business
