UAB Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures Hosts International Literature Conference in Madrid
On July 9-12, 2004, in Madrid, Spain, the UAB Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures co-hosted the III Congreso Internacional – Madrid en la literatura española, iberoamericana y universal (III International Congress – Madrid in Spanish, Latin American and World Literature) with the Asociación Hispánica de Humanidades. The event was co-directed by Hispanists Dr. Sheri Spaine Long, Chair of the UAB Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and Dr. Enrique Ruiz-Fornells, Emeritus Professor of the Department of Romance Languages, University of Alabama.
With 125 international scholars in attendance from colleges and universities in Canada, Mexico, Peru, Spain, and the U.S., there were more than 100 presentations on such diverse themes as Madrid in literature of the Spanish Golden Age, Madrid through the lense of South American and Central American writers, Madrid in international film, Madrid in popular culture literature, and literary Madrid in the wake of 3-11. The academic exchange was vigorous and fruitful. Selected proceedings will be published by the Asociación Hispánica de Humanidades.
The international congress was supported by the Ayuntamiento de Madrid (Mayor’s Office of Madrid), who hosted a reception for the scholars in the Patio de Cristales at which Ana Botella -- the former first lady of Spain, wife of President José María Aznar and currently serves as the Concejala de Empleo y Servicios al Ciudadano in Madrid’s City Hall -- presided along with the co-directors of the congress. The congress ended with a private tour of the National Library in Madrid, Spain. Other sponsors included the Instituto Cervantes, Comunidad de Madrid, Enforex, Estudio Internacional Sampere and Houghton Mifflin.
Participation from UAB featured Josh Carter, Director of UAB Study Abroad, who organized a series of panels on Madrid after 3-11, and Dr. Lourdes Sánchez-López of the UAB Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, who presented on Madrid and the Transnational Classroom. Dr. Carlos Orihuela of the UAB Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures read his poetry, and UAB student Victoria Garrett read a comparative paper on Shakespeare and Calderón de la Barca.
