FIESTA Scholarship

FIESTA Scholarship:  Attention Hispanic Heritage Students. This scholarship is provided by a generous donation from FIESTA, Birmingham's premiere celebration of Hispanic culture and heritage, see http://www.fiestahbc.com

Two primarily merit-based scholarships of $2,500.00 each will be awarded in 2008 for two continuing or entering UAB students of Hispanic heritage for the 2009-2010 academic year.   Eligible students from all majors will be considered.

Qualified students must:

  • self-identify as Hispanic
  • have minimum 3.0 GPA
  • be active in Manos Juntas and/or other Hispanic groups on UAB campus
  • be a volunteer at FIESTA (Oct. 2009)
  • promote Hispanic culture on UAB campus and community

Portia Foxx Brooks and Hazel Ruth Boswell Foxx Study Abroad Scholarship

One award per year of $500. One merit-based scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student who meets the following criteria:

  • Applicants must demonstrate a passion for the Italian language and culture. This may be perceived by the applicant’s participation in organizations such as Italian clubs, Italian conversation tables, Italian tutoring, community lectures, articles, etc.
  • Applicants must have applied and been admitted to a UAB faculty led program in Italy. Said program must be in conjunction with the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
  • Applicants for the Portia Foxx Brooks and Hazel Ruth Boswell Foxx Scholarship must have completed at least Introductory Italian I (ITL 101) and Introductory Italian II (ITL 102) or its equivalent.
  • Applicants should demonstrate academic promise and have earned at least a 3.00 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in coursework completed prior to the time of application.

To be considered for the scholarship applicants should submit:

  • Scholarship application along with one copy of your college transcript
  • Two letters of recommendation from people who know you well and can comment on your academic and career goals.

Tunisian Community Center Study Abroad Scholarship **The TCC Scholarship has been cancelled for 2009 ** Please contact the Director of the AMIDST Learn and Serve Program, Mr. Lee Jennings, LearnServe@amideast.org for info

One award of $5,000.00. One scholarship will be awarded for a UAB student pursuing a B.A. or B.S. who show serious commitment to the studying of Arabic at UAB. The Tunisian Community Center Study-Abroad Scholarship is based on merit and involvement in Arabic community/student service activities, and a commitment to North-African and Middle-Eastern studies. Financial need may be considered.

This scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving student of Arabic at UAB to study in Tunisia for a semester (approved study-abroad program), and is a gift made to the department by the Tunisian Community Center. www.tunisiancommunity.org

To be considered for the Tunisian Community Center Study-Abroad Scholarship, please submit the following:

  • Scholarship application
  • One (1) copy of your high school and college transcript (unofficial copy acceptable)
  • Two (2) Recommendations (one should be from your Arabic instructor at UAB) from people who know you well and can comment on your academic and career goals.

Foreign Language Advisory Committee Scholarship (FLAC)

One award per year of $1000.00. One merit-based scholarship is awarded annually for a continuing UAB student studying on campus at UAB or traveling abroad on an approved study abroad program during summer or fall 2009, or spring 2010. The student must be pursuing a major or minor in the UAB Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

Spanish Pre-Med Scholarship

The Vargas-Overbach Spanish Pre-Med Scholarship. One award per year of $500.00. One merit-based scholarship will be awarded for incoming, transfer, or continuing students majoring in Spanish or Foreign Languages (Spanish Track) at UAB.The " Vargas-Overbach Spanish & Pre-Medicine Scholarship" is based primarily on merit.   Financial need may be considered.   This Spanish scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving Spanish and Pre-Medicine student and is a gift to the department from the Vargas and Overbach-Cohen families.

Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship Information

College Language Association Study Abroad Scholarship

William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship
The deadline of March 15 for this year's William Jefferson Clinton Scholarships has recently been announced. It provides funding for American students who are interested in experiencing life in the Middle East for the first time and consists of full room and board and tuition for one semester at the American University in Dubai. Preference is given to those who are studying the Middle East andits languages.
