The Transnational Classroom (TC) is an innovative methodology for the teaching and learning of language and culture created and first implemented by Dr. Lourdes Sánchez-López and Dr. Jessica Ramos-Harthun and during the summer 2002 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Further implementations of this methodology into the technological field are currently being developed in conjunction with California Lutheran University (CLU). With the aid of computer technology (videoconference, e-mail, chat room and discussion boards), peer teaching and a study abroad group, the TC connects two or more groups of students in different parts of the world to learn about foreign languages and cultures. Participants engage in daily e-mail communication, periodical videoconferencing in the target language, as well as frequent digital photograph exchange.
The main objective is to give the on-campus students the opportunity to participate in the foreign culture through their peers´ experiences abroad. The TC promotes study abroad programs while motivating students to continue studying the target language.
