2007.6.1 Resolution Commending the Service of Jeffrey Engler

Distinguished Service Award-Recognition by the Faculty Senate Executive Committee

Whereas, Jeffrey Engler, Ph.D. Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics in the School of Medicine and Joint Health Sciences joined the faculty at UAB in 1982 and his research has included the study of adenovirus DNA replication and the structure and function of proteinases to contribute to the understanding of gene expression and the activation of enzymes in rheumatoid arthritis and in tumor metastasis. Whereas, Jeffrey Engler has served The Faculty Senate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a Senator, Member of the Curriculum and Research Committee, and as Chair of the Curriculum and Research Committee, and as an elected representative of his academic unit to the UAB Faculty Policies and Procedures Committee. Whereas, Jeffrey Engler has served as a member of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and was elected as Chair-elect of the Faculty in March 2006 but stepped down to accept the appointment as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the UAB Graduate School in May 2006. Whereas, Jeffrey Engler served the Senate as Chair of the Curriculum and Research Committee coordinating the pilot testing of a student rating process and the development of guiding principles for a teaching effectiveness evaluation process to support in part the University’s commitment to measurement of teaching effectiveness. Whereas, Jeffrey Engler has performed meaningful and needed service to the Faculty Senate and the members of the UAB faculty with his efforts in the area of teaching effectiveness evaluation implementation, faculty development grants review process, faculty development practices and UAB policies such as the copyright policy and review of the proposed UAB Honors College. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED on April 17, 2007 by the Executive Committee of Faculty Senate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham that: The Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate expresses appreciation to Jeffrey Engler for his distinguished service to The University of Alabama at Birmingham in representing and forwarding its mission of shared governance The Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate commends the leadership, diligence, passion, and careful judgment which are excellences of the character of Jeffrey Engler with which he has served the Faculty Senate of The University of Alabama at Birmingham


2007.6.2 A Resolution Commending the Service of Joe L. March, Ph.D.

 WHEREAS, Joe L. March, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has served with distinction as the Chair of the UAB Faculty and its Senate for the academic year, 2006-2007; and WHEREAS, Joe March received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin and directed the Guided Inquiry Laboratories for general chemistry courses at the University of Wisconsin prior to joining the UAB faculty in 1999; and WHEREAS, Joe March was named by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) as the 2003 State of Alabama Professor of the Year for his introduction of student-focused active learning strategies and interactive tutorials in the UAB General Chemistry course offerings documenting his dedication to student learning, teaching, research and chemistry; and HEREAS, Joe March has served as the Chair of the UAB Honors Experiences Coordination Committee and served on the Provost Assessment Focus Group and the Periodic Career Developmental Review Working Group providing faculty perspective on policy and program development; and WHEREAS, Joe March as Chair of the Faculty Senate served as the Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama System and to the UAB Academic Programs Council for the academic year, 2006-2007; and WHEREAS, Joe March throughout his tenure at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, has exemplified dedication to the goals and objectives as outlined in the UAB Strategic Plan of the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the areas of teaching and service; and WHEREAS, Joe March has throughout his tenure as Chair of the Faculty Senate exemplified the highest dedication to shared governance, encouraging accountability in all matters affecting faculty and UAB; and WHEREAS, Joe March has been instrumental in strengthening relationships among faculty through direct and open discussion of issues affecting students, faculty, and the University community; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by The Faculty Senate of The University of Alabama at Birmingham that it expresses its sincere appreciation to Dr. Joe L. March for his service and contributions to The University of Alabama at Birmingham and to the UAB Faculty Senate.
