Summary of the November 11, 2008 Faculty Senate Meeting



Chair Report


Chair Warren Martin announced the following items:


1)      Graduate School is conducting a survey on scholarly integrity and graduate faculty members in selected schools receiving an email invitation are encouraged to participate.


2)      Alesia Jones has been appointed as the Interim Director of Human Resources.


3)      Carol Ray has been hired as the permanent Senate Office Associate.


4)      State of the University address by President Garrison was held last month and was well attended.


5)      Upcoming presentations include the Health Services Foundation at the December senate meeting and the UAB Health System by Will Ferniany at the January senate meeting.


6)      Senate Chair will be attending the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees meeting on November 13-14, 2008 in Tuscaloosa.





Strategic Enrollment Management


Dr. Philip Way, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Programs, and Ms. Chenise Ryan, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, presented information on strategic enrollment management. Topics covered were the strategic plan, changes to admission requirements, quality of students, diversity of enrollment, challenges and initiatives, retention, and faculty involvement. Curriculum and Research Committee Report


Chair of the Curriculum and Research Committee Sally Anne McInerny reported that the committee is compiling the feedback from faculty about the IDEA survey for student evaluation of faculty teaching. The feedback will be shared with Dr. Claire Peel (Associate Provost for Faculty Development and Faculty Affairs) as part of the three year pilot program being conducted by the university.



Governance and Operations Committee Report


Chair of the Governance and Operations Committee Janelle Chiasera reported that the committee is working with the office associate and secretary to update and reformat the senate constitution, bylaws, and appendices.



Open Forum


Chair Warren Martin asked the senators to break into small groups to share information about teaching such as workload, student retention, learning experiences, and memorable moments. A representative from each group summarized the information and presented it to the senators.





The next senate meeting is December 9, 2008 in the Administration Building Penthouse CR1, the next executive committee meeting is November 19, 2008, the next executive committee meeting with the President and Provost is December 2, 2008, and the next FPPC meeting is November 21, 2008.
