Summary of the March 10, 2009 Faculty Senate Meeting
Chair Warren Martin announced the following items:
1) He attended the Higher Education Day Rally sponsored by the Alabama Higher Education Partnership on March 5, 2009 in Montgomery.† The impact of voters talking to legislators is positive.† We would benefit from more participation and the Chair of the Faculty Senate should be more involved in promoting the event.
2) Graduation will be held on May 9, 2009.† There will be a change in the format with two ceremonies divided by school at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.† The hooding ceremony will be at noon in the

3) Opportunities related to the federal economic stimulus package for
are listed at http://www.stimulus.alabama.gov.† Faculty members can go there and review the list to determine if they have a project that fits the funds.† Alabama
Conversations about Clinical and Translational Science
Dr. Max Michael, Dean of the School of Public Health, discussed the One Great Community project by UABís Center for Clinical and Translational Science.† The goal of the project is to connect biomedical investigators with the multiple communities they serve which include urban lay, health professionals, and university.† The collaboration will ensure that the research efforts of the university respond to and reflect the needs of the community through an active process of community involvement, dialogue, and mutual understanding.† The presenter expressed interest in holding One Great Community sessions with the university community and mentioned the NIH challenge grants available through the stimulus package that offer different units on campus the opportunity to work together.
Quality Enhancement Plan
Dr. Marilyn Kurata, Director of Core Curriculum Enhancement, provided an update on UABís Quality Enhancement Plan.† Topics covered were goals; progress in achieving a more coherent undergraduate experience; progress in enhancing student competencies in writing, quantitative literacy, and ethics and civic responsibility; institutional and programmatic assessment; and leadership role of the university in undergraduate education.
Provost Revisions to Senate Constitution and Bylaws Amendments
Chair Warren Martin presented the recommended revisions from the Provost to the constitution and bylaws amendments approved by the Faculty Senate in May 2008.† The revisions were voted on and concurred with by the senate and will be forwarded to the Provost.
Curriculum and Research Committee Report
Chair of the Curriculum and Research Committee Kay Clements reported that the announcement and application guidelines for the Faculty Development Grant Program were distributed by the Associate Provost for Faculty Development and Faculty Affairs Claire Peel in February 2009.
Faculty Affairs Committee Report
Chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee Stephen Moser reported that the committee will be meeting to discuss the ad hoc committee report with recommendations for the administrator evaluations.† Feedback from the committee members will be forwarded to the Faculty Senate Executive Committee for consideration.
Senate Representatives to University-wide Committees
Senate Representative to the UAB Athletics Advisory Committee William Cockerham reported that the principal focus of the committee this year has been on improving the academic performance and graduation rate of student athletes.† He reported that progress was made this year on improving the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) through the opening of the student athlete academic center, the hiring of tutors and other educational specialists, and the formation and activities of an academic reform group.† He reported on several athletic teams including menís football and basketball and womenís volleyball and cross-country.
The next senate meeting is April 14, 2009 in the Administration Building Penthouse CR1, the next executive committee meeting is March 25, 2009, the next executive committee meeting with the President and Provost is April 7, 2009, and the next FPPC meeting is March 20, 2009.
