The UAB Faculty Senate met on 12 November 1999 in 407 Ryals Hall.
Those present were: Senators Bronstein, Brown, Burns, Eberhardt, Elias, Farmer, Fleming, Fullard, Greenup, Gunther-Canada, Haeberle, Harris, Hutchison, Jackson (for Ball), Jannett (Chair), Johnson, Kawai, Knowles, Lemons (for Filler), Paul, Pfeiffer, Price (for Alexander), Rigney, Rostand, Sapp, Schnorrenberg (Secretary,) Snyder, Spencer, Vincent, Alternate Senators Beard, Hogan, McKenna, Peel, Wheatley, and Wright.
The chair called the meeting to order at 8:08 a.m. He asked if there were corrections to the minutes of the meeting of 8 October 1999. Hearing none, he ordered the minutes approved as distributed.
The chair made his report. In it he referred to his listserv distributed summary of faculty queries about conversion to the semester system. A copy of this is attached to the original of these minutes. He also showed a Fiscal Year 2000-2001 State Operating Appropriations Request Process memorandum, a copy of which is attached to the original of these minutes, and an Analysis of UAB Academic Affairs Salaries.
Associate Provost Michael Neilson was recognized to give a report on conversion to the semester system. A copy of the powerpoint outline of his presentation is attached to the original of these minutes.
Senator Snyder was recognized to give a report on the work o the Curriculum and Educational Policies Committee. He summarized the work it had done in its four meetings so far this year.
Senator Greenup was recognized to give a report on the work of the Faculty Affairs Committee. A packet of administrative evaluation materials, under discussion by her committee is attached to the original of these minutes. She asked for comments and suggestions about these from senators by 10 December.
Senator Burns was recognized to give the report of the Finance Committee. A summary of the meeting of October 29 is attached to the original of these minutes.
Senator Hutchison was recognized to give two committee reports: that of the Committee on Governance and Operations and that of the Arts and Sciences Council. Each group has met once. Reports of their meetings are attached to the original of these minutes.
Senator Bronstein was recognized to give the report of the Faculty Policies and Procedures Committee.
The chair pointed out that there was little time remaining before automatic adjournment. Senator Rostand moved that the time of adjournment be extended to 10:10 a.m. The chair asked for unanimous consent and, hearing no objection, extended the time.
The chair asked the secretary to read the motion offered by Senator Bronstein at the last meeting whose consideration was postponed to this meeting. The motion, as amended by unanimous consent, is:
The senate shall sponsor a university-wide faculty forum at which each dean would make a presentation.
Following brief debate, Senator Wyss moved that the motion be referred to either the Governance and Operations Committee or the Faculty Affairs Committee. This motion carried.
Senator Wyss asked to be recognized to express his appreciation to the UAB police chief for the work he is doing to improve pedestrian safety.
A brief open forum followed.
